Get fit with your kids around? For some of us, that sounds like a nearly impossible feat. I know that it is a huge challenge for me. I’m a single mom, I work from home, and I homeschool my son a significant portion of the year. I can’t really justify an expensive gym membership because I know that I probably won’t use it enough to make it worthwhile. I mean, if I couldn’t make it work as a twenty-something without kids, I feel like it would be futile to try now that I’m in my 30’s and have a young child. I also can’t depend on anyone to watch my son several times a week so I can go out and exercise. However, I know that I need to focus more on my health (especially since I have a thyroid condition). Being skinny is not my priority, but being healthy is. So what’s a busy mom to do?
5 Fun Ways to Get Fit With Your Kids
Have you ever watched iCarly? If you have, you may have noticed that they sometimes have a segment called “Random Dancing!” (Yes, you have to yell it.) It’s basically when they turn on music and then proceed to dance like crazy people around the room. I do this with my son. Often. It is fun and gets your heart pumping. Push the furniture out of the way, pop in a CD or crank up your favorite playlist in Spotify, and get moving!
Go for a Walk
Take some time to enjoy the outdoors. Personally, I like going for a walk around the neighborhood or at a local park either early in the morning or as the sun is setting. There are a wide variety of benefits to walking regularly (20-30 minutes a day). It can strengthen your muscles and bones. It can help prevent (or at least manage) serious conditions like heart disease, blood pressure, and type 2 diabetes. It can even be a mood booster. On top of all that, it also gives you a chance to bond with your child, talk without the distractions that are at home, and explore your area.
Do Yard Work Together
Have a ton of nuts or fruit from trees in your yard? Is your yard a mess of leaves and branches? Get the kids, some yard tools, and get to work. You can even make it into a contest by seeing who can collect the most fruit/nuts or build up the biggest pile of leaves.
Gardening is hard work. It gets your muscles working and you may even break a sweat. Between pulling up weeds, tilling your plot, planting everything, keeping your plants watered, and finally harvesting everything, it is quite the satisfying workout. It is also a steady workout since most plants require continuous tending. We try to go to our community garden plot a couple of times a week- especially during the summer when the heat and bugs could kill your plants in no time at all yet rain can cause weeds to pop up like…well, weeds.
Come on, you had to know that this suggestion was coming. Playing with your kids is probably the most fun way to get fit. Think about the games we used to play as kids – Hide and Go Seek, Freeze Tag, Hopscotch, Flag Football, Twister, Jump Rope, Kickball…the possibilities are endless! If you haven’t already, it might be time to introduce your kids to all of those fun outdoor games from “back in the day”. I can almost guarantee you they will love them just as much as we did.
These are just a few ways you can make fitness a fun family affair. What are some of your favorite ways to hang out and get fit with your kids?
