Breaking The Habits That Are Keeping You Stuck

We all have things we want to accomplish but sometimes we get slowed down because we just get “stuck” and can’t seem to move forward and get it done.  For instance, I have things on my weekly to-do list that I have a hard time getting accomplished and my biggest “stuck habit” is #4 – Perfectionism.  I always want everything to be just right.  I have to give myself permission to let go of perfectionism and just do it.

We can also get stuck on our bigger desires because it seems like too much work or that it will take too long to accomplish.  Getting unstuck is a common issue that I’ve coached many clients on.

Breaking The Habits That Are Keeping You Stuck

Whether it’s a big decision, a difficult conversation, or just not being able to figure out what you want, getting unstuck can be challenging.  Here are the four common habits I’ve seen, see if any of them speak to you.

#1 Preoccupation with your obstacles.

Staring at the problem right in front of you and not looking at the big picture or the long-term goal of where you really want to go.  How do you get past this?  Stop focusing on the problem and start focusing on the solution.  Take a look at what’s going right in your situation, know your strengths and use these to overcome what’s wrong.

#2 Sabotaging Self-Talk.

Telling yourself “I can’t”, “I’ll never”, or “I’m not good enough”.  Your thoughts quickly become your reality so start replacing your sabotaging self-talk with a more positive conversation.  “I CAN do this”, “I deserve this”, and ” I AM capable of making this happen”.

#3 Over-planning.

People who are stuck can often look they are being very productive because they are doing some great planning, making to-do lists and creating strategies.  Plans are great but actions are better.  You’ve got to take the first step to getting it done.

#4 Perfectionism.

Having to make sure that everything you do is perfect creates a lot of pressure and sets you up for failure.  Give yourself permission to be imperfect.  Be human.  It will be much easier to put yourself out there and try new things.  Forget perfect, focus on the joy in an experience.
