Having a smoothie or a protein shake in the morning is a really easy way to get a healthy breakfast. And, most of us don’t have a lot of time to make a full meal early in the day, so a breakfast you can drink can be really convenient!
But protein shakes can be kind of…boring. Sometimes they’re too thick and you have to choke them down. Sometimes they’re bland and have no taste. And sometimes, depending on what you put in them, they can taste absolutely terrible.
Don’t worry! You can come up with a protein shake that you’ll actually enjoy drinking every day. Here are a few tips for making a delicious protein shake you’ll love!
How to Make a Protein Shake You’ll Love
Step 1: Choose your protein powder.
In general, you’ll be able to find these three protein powders nearby.

- [easyazon_link identifier=”B0013OVWHM” locale=”US” tag=”fatfitnessgirl-20″]Whey protein[/easyazon_link]

Personally, I find soy to be…okay. It’s okay. It’ll do. Most of the whey protein tastes absolutely awful, in my humble opinion. So the rice protein typically wins out. But you’ll want to try all three, so you can find the one that suits YOU best.
I will say, though, if you want a protein powder that really and truly tastes like dessert, [easyazon_link identifier=”B0013OQ98E” locale=”US” tag=”fatfitnessgirl-20″]Beverly International’s Cookies and Cream powder[/easyazon_link] is unbelievable. It’s whey, but it’s amazing.
To give you just a little bit more information to base your decision on this is what each are made of.:
Whey is made from cow’s milk.
Soy is made from soybean which makes it a great vegetarian option.
Rice protein is made from (surprise) rice. It is the best vegan option of the three.
Step 2: Find a go-to formula.
Start with a very basic protein shake recipe and master it. Here’s one you can make easily:
- 1 scoop of flavored protein powder
- 1 cup of milk (dairy, soy, or almond)
- 1 frozen banana
- 1 handful leafy greens (spinach, kale)
Trust me, it’s really good. The protein powder and the banana add sweetness and you can’t taste the greens at all. Honestly.
Step 3: Switch it up!
As you go along, you’ll find other fruits that work well and that you love! Try blueberries, strawberries, mango, or pineapple. You might even throw in a tablespoon of peanut butter, cashew butter, or almond butter for more protein. Want a nutritional boost?
